Time to Celebrate!

The Official Golden Anniversary Birthday will be celebrated at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, throughout Wednesday, June 17th 1998.

The Golden Anniversary will be celebrated at The Bridgewater Hall Manchester, on Wednesday June 17 1998. The programme will include:
  • A video about ‘calculating machines and technology’ prior to 1948
  • A talk by Professor Kilburn on the events in Manchester during 1948 and 1949
  • A review by Sebastian de Ferranti of the world’s first commercial computer
  • A response by the Vice Chancellor, on computing at The University
  • A response by ICL on computing at West Gorton
  • An observation of the influence Manchester has had on computer development
  • The switching on of the replica ‘Baby’ machine

These will be followed by a special effects event, ‘The Impact of Computers’, to illustrate in an entertaining and interesting way the impact of computers on society.

First Night of the Hallé Proms

In the evening, the Hallé Orchestra will perform the first night of their Proms season at The Bridgewater Hall, dedicating it to ‘The Golden Anniversary Celebration’.
